I had a similar experience in Leicester nearly 30 years ago. On my way to work (late as usual) I overtook an unmarked police car in traffic, and a little while later they pulled me over, they got me for speeding, overtaking on a zebra crossing and going through a red light, they told me the three offences also equalling driving without due care

- I don't know what happened to the speeding but that somehow got dropped, I pleaded guilty to the overtaking on crossing, and I pleaded not guilty to the red light as I still to this day swear it was amber. I put in a plea of mitigation for the over taking on zebra crossing, stating the traffic was queued and stationary and being on a bike I was high up and had a good view of both side of the crossing, and much to my suprise I was not penalised for that. However even though the police has stated they were following about 10 yards behind me, and I argued that the lights were on a crossroads where I was turning right, it was morning rush hour traffic in the city center, and the police had no lights or siren on, so if the light was red how could they have followed me through without endangering other road users?

- Got 3 points and a fine for that, but I considered myself very luck to get away with just that
