Unless your garage is airtight, a dehumidifier will just suck damp air in from outside.

Just going from personal experience, they do seem to work. Two years ago before I started using them, I was getting condensation on the engine cases etc, but on recommendation I started using the dehumidifiers under the bikes, and so far both last year and this year I've had no condensation on the bikes. I take your point that you will never have a moisture free atmosphere in the garage, but my bikes are moisture free which is the objective.

Yes they do. I put one in my motorhome, for a week, and got 6 pints of water in the catch tray. Then i closed all the vents, next week, just half a pint.
