Executive Cars Of The 1980's (Probably Of Zero Interest To Most Of You?)

As per the title, you probably aren't interested in this?

I really enjoyed the video though. Cos in the 80's/90's I was into fast bikes but initially didn't see the point of fast (ish) cars.
But I did like the idea of a luxury barge for long trips in comfort.

The video mentions dozens of 80's executive cars. Many of which were utter shite! But I owned some & the better examples & still recall them with fond memories 🙂

In no particular order...

Mercedes 190E
Audi 100
BMW 5 series
Vauxhall Carlton
Ford Cortina (couldn't afford the Granada at the time)

I had an old Merc 190E and a C200, that was when they made cars
Allegedly, Merc deliberately toned down their build quality from the 80's onwards.
Simply because people knew they could purchase something like a C200 & it would outlast 95% of other cars.
Consequently, although their cars were approximately 75% more expensive than say a Ford for instance. They also lasted fives times as long.

Brilliant for the buyers, but not great business for Mercedes.

Edit...
Interestingly (or maybe not?) as a very regular visitor to Egypt on scuba diving holidays since the late 90's. In the early days, the taxi drivers car of choice was usually a 70's/80's Merc. Often bashed to f#ck body wise but still running like a Swiss watch.
However, in recent years their taxi of choice is now an entry level Hyundai.
I guess that by comparison to an old school quality Merc that was built to last. The Hyundai taxis are the 4 wheeled version of a washing machine. i.e cheap to purchase initially, reliable & ultimately a disposable tool/commodity? 🤔

Yes I remember the 3 German makes well, pulling out junctions without looking, turning right acroos on coming traffic without looking OUCH on several occasions. bent bike and badly bruised me. Mainly driven by W**KERS
Oh shit, I've had several Mercs and Beemers. No Audis though. Never harmed a biker in any of them though. So despite what 'er indoors says, maybe I'm only a partial wanker! 🤣

Your safe Don, so did I. It had sticker on the screen, a bikers revenge. funny no one ever pulled out on that.
Saw a six car pile up once, Volvo 240 at the lights the rest behind and a pal of mine halfway in an escort, a car ploughed into the rear smashing all the cars my mates seat broke and he was lying flat, "The Volvo" not a feckin mark on it, it did not even move the one behind was crushed, those huge shock absorbed bumpers worked a treat.

Late 80's early 90's, When we lived dahn sarf, the bitch across the road had a Volvo, a 340dl I think.

I'd knock off work at 6am, and be in bed at 7, about 7:30 you'd hear the ovlov come out of the drive, engine screaming. Could hear it all down the road, turn left, then scream off again until the screaming faded in the distance.

One morning I stopped her and said "Why don't you change gear?"

She says "It's an automatic".

It wasn't. 😁

Hardly an executive car, mind.🤣
