Used to get the odd Tornado etc. round my neck of the woods but that 'Controlled descent into terrain' of the Tornado back in 2009 or thereabouts was pretty much the last time there was fast jets through the glen at the Rest and Be Thankful. Very occasionally we'll see some Hawks from Valley and, until Covid happened, we used to get regular joint military exercises in the area with the SAS Chinook flight, Hercs coming over and even once had a Dutch anti-aircraft unit blasting away during an exercise simulating an attack on Coulport. Even though that's more than five miles away the noise of their outfit (Sounded like some sort of Bofors) was pretty impressive. Haven't had any infantry exercises in the last four years at all now.

I wasn't living here at the time but a couple of guys from the village were on the volunteer fire crew and attended the crash site. I remember reading the crash report and that term 'controlled descent into terrain' that is standard for when the pilot was still in control but cocked it up and couldn't avoid hitting the terrain always gets me. I seem to remember that the crash investigators concluded that the crew knew they were going in and the backseat man had tried to eject but it didn't save him. Those last few seconds of life when you know you are truly fucked must be a right bastard of a time.

Before that incident it wasn't unknown to go up the Rest and there'd be a big bird going past you at eye level. It's a strange experience when you are in a car looking across at an aircraft going past!

The F3's where interceptors high level aircraft unlike the GR4 so flying low was not there main area of daily work, sad to lose folk like that though

Who could fly something like that and not want to do a little spot of low altitude 'racing' for the hell of it. Unfortunately those two fellows paid the ultimate price. I was talking to an old Lightning and Jaguar pilot a while back and he was telling me that a good mate who was also very experienced on Jaguars was visiting in Wales and went out for a spin after a heavy night on the booze in the mess, which was apparently uncharacteristic of him when he was due to fly, Story goes that he got airborne and apparently was showing off to the youngsters when he went into the ground.

Quite a few have paid the price more so in the past as intensive training and the use of simulators has helped, but let's not forget that low level is one thing our pilots are some of the very best and have been since the war, An old wartime RAF joke.

An American pilot goes to see his CO,

Pilot: Sir instead of flying at our usual 40.000 feet what would happen if I flew at 30.000 feet, ?

CO: Boy if you flew at 30.000 feet you would get the silver star,

Pilot: "wow" well what would happen if I flew at 20.000 feet, ?

CO: Jeez son if you flew at 20.000 feet you would get the Congressional medal of honour,

Pilot: "Golly" so what would happen If I flew at 10.000 feet, ?

CO: "God dammit son" if you flew at 10:000 feet you would get a Congressional medal of honour and a ticket state side with a ticker tape parade,

Pilot: "Oh my God" so what would happen if I flew at 5.000 feet, ?

CO: "5.000 feet" that son is impossible, you see at 5.000 feet the air is full of British Aircraft.

The Buccaneers were legendary for flying extremely low, as in, basically, if they had their undercart down they'd actually be rolling their wheels, incredible when you think that, at the speeds they were going, it would have only taken a slight twitch and that'd be the end of it. I guess that, if you don't take risks in practice then you won't have a chance when it comes to the real thing.

I guess the RAF has always had something of a reputation for wild pilots. My old father would say that, whenever the Lightnings were taking off in a hurry at Leuchars the guys in the tower had their hand hovering over the crash alarms because the pilots were in the habit of retracting their undercarriage as soon as they felt the aircraft lift and then would pull back and try to go vertical as soon as possible usually resulting in a shower of sparks from the titanium fin on the underside of the fuel tank.

The fact that the bomb bay was rotational helped it acted like suction similar to a sports car with side skirts and the like,

This guy was a Legend the powers that be wanted him court marshalled but the people thought it was fantastic and they had to let it drop

Mirror in the bathroom, and Too much too young were both released early in 1980, but the Specials recorded TMTY in 1979.
I rest my case @Scrappy ๐Ÿค—
TWO of the tracks included in a video.about the 1970's weren't "released" until January 1980 & April 1980. Hence the reason I passed comment on that fact ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's a brave/very knowledgeable man (or an idiot) who's prepared to attempt to correct me on the subject of one of my favourite types of music ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had a mirror in the bathroom long before 1980. Bit posh I guess!
