Sword of Fenrir
Mk1

And before all the salon, gay ect ect crap starts, has anyone had, got or had a good go in one, what did you think.

Not the mk2 or 3, only the original..

The 225bhp version was a lot better than the 180bhp version. It's quite a heavy car as a coupe or as a convertible.
The Quattro 4 wheel drive system makes them incredibly sure-footed. At the expense of also making them a bit sterile. i.e. no tail happy opposite lock fun like you get in an enthusiastically driven rear wheel drive vehicle.

A MK1 these days is an old car Jon. So expect well over 100k miles. Not a problem if it's been maintained well & not booted everywhere it goes.
Not sure if they did the TDi motor in the MK1? If they did, get a test drive cos it'll pull like a train & undoubtedly surprise you with it's performance V's the smaller engined petrol models.

Fundamentally it's a Golf in a pretty frock.
In coupe form I'd kinda agree Sarky.
But it's still a very pretty frock. The Golf has always been a superb vehicle in all its incarnations. However, IMHO it can't compete with an Audi TT in the looks dept. Especially if you compare a TT convertible with a Golf convertible. The TT just looks right from all angles. Where as the Golf looks exactly like what it is. i.e. a family hatchback with the roof chopped off. And a boot substituted for the far more practical hatchback.

I like the Mk1s but not subsequent incarnations so much.
If you're looking at any quattro make sure somebody has not staggered the wheel sizes/tyres. Quattros need an equal footprint at each corner else you'll burn the gearbox. Similarly, they're that sensitive that if you've one on lease if you pop a tyre you'll have to replace all four.
At MK1 age build quality was pretty good still too. In the last 3 years it's dropped dramatically, whether it's the reliance on Chindian (one for @Big Sandy ) tech or the outsourced build plants (Not much is actually made in Germany)

And I don't think they made a chip fat burning Mk1 so you're good to go.

My pile of crap: (and fuck all that “hairdresser’s” nonsense…) I had one of the first MK 1’s and it was one of the best cars, I ever owned.
If you are into car design: That car had almost nothing out of the average Audi toolkit. It was a unique piece of art down to the inside door handles. Fullstop.
I did not own a 4 wheel drive since it took away some of the luggage space in the rear. Bit man, did it perform.

If you find a well maintained, low mileage one. Go for it. If I had room for a fourth car, I’d buy one again.

(Oh, I know, unfortunately it is German. But what can can I help it? We just build the best cars on that awfully fucked up planet… 🤪)

And NO. I do not expect anyone to agree. And do not give a shit neither…

no more trash talk about an Audi TT being in any way connected to hairdressing or homosexuality
…not if we get get rid of all the arseholes who tend to talk trash about homos and hairdressers… 🤐
But I could not care less.

In fact, we could always go back to the infamous TTF… 🥱 (Sarcasm-Alert)

I remember them being launched and the first thing they reminded me of was a Speedster. I've never planted my arse in the MK1 to drive only had a spin in later ones which are a bit 'generic Audi' (not that it's a bad thing) but the MK1s, despite the floorpan share, are a unique car.

If I was to have an Audi it would be a 1979 Audi 80 in metallic bluegreen. Why? Simply because back in the early nineties a mate had one, it was built like a Panzer tank (Crushed a Ford Fiesta like a tin can and just needed the bumper straightened out) seemed bulletproof mechanically and the colour was beautiful.

Chas, at the pre-launch time I was at a seminar while working with Lufthansa, and a guy from Audi held it. He brought some pre-production brochures, and I swore that if I could afford one, I would. Which I did…
