The supreme irony of Alf is that Johnny Speight wrote him as a hate figure and class traitor to be derided and mocked ...... but the Great British public of that era took him to their hearts and loved him for his foibles and saying, in private, what most people themselves thought. You wouldn't have found him asleep under The Guardian or Mirror! Speight and Mitchell found they had created a bit of a monster to their own way of thinking. That's poetry!

Since yourself & @GaleForceEight first mentioned the idea of comedy classics. I've been on a mission to purchase a few, before they are banned from sale for being non PC.
Some folk might think that idea is paranoia at its very best? But try searching Ebay with the key words "Confederate flag". See how many (few) results there are for anything bearing that flag. Whether it's actual flags, patches or T-shirts etc etc.
I think it's fair to say that to the average Brit. That flag invokes images/memories of a Dodge Charger roof on the Dukes of Hazard General Lee, rock n roll music & rebel American in a good (rebellious) kinda way. I certainly never associated it with slavery. But it's now damn near disappeared from Ebay UK
I've built up quite a collection of old school comedy shows & a few action series as well from yesteryear.
The strange thing is, a huge percentage were originally shown on the BBC
Obviously they had a sense of humour between the 60's & 90's

Went down hill fast after that, a lot of gems in the old stuff, on another note I see old Jack Smethurst died this week, of Love they Neighber fame, that would upset a few delicate souls these days
Love Thy Neighbour & Till Death Us Do Part are now 2 of the the most expensive comedy boxsets of their era Don
So far, my maximum spend on any boxset has been £20 for this...
But at the opposite end of the scale. This was only £2.99...

Yes mate, but as I/we have said many times before.
The guys being overtly "racist" weren't meant to be taken seriously. Their unreasonable rants were 95% of the reason why the shows were so funny.
But as @MartytheMartian said a few posts back. Apparently us poorly educated, working class plebs can't be trusted to work that out for ourselves?

The funny thing about the Confederate flag and the American Civil War is that, to most Americans of the South at the time, it had little to do with slavery and everything to do with keeping the wealth of the south in the south rather than sending it all to a central government in Washington and only seeing a fraction of it back. The 'North' turned it into a war against slavery because they couldn't very well admit that they objected to states breaking away from their young 'United' nation. When John Brown's body was carried into New York there were riots because the Immigrant labour in that city were deeply opposed to slaves being freed to come and take the jobs that were barely keeping them alive. The Yanks are never told the truth about their own history, Christ, Lincoln refused to be in the same room with a black man so 'black lives' only mattered to him as a tool for chucking countless lives at keeping his States United.
