So what frivolous things have you bought lately? Why?

I have just spent out for two things I really do not need but would like.

<Stamp Stamp>

Item one. A Coke hat. (Bowler hat). My dad left me his hats when he passed away in December, but my head is slightly larger and so his hats don’t fit me, but they DO fit my son. Anyway, Lock and Co. of St James Street are arguably the best in the world. (Though Dad tended more towards Bates). The stars came into alignment and I happened across one of theirs in my size on eBay. Second hand but barely been worn and is as new. Locks charge £425 for them, so £90.50 later I have a new hat. It arrived today and couldn't fit better!

Item two.... My great uncle had two issues when dining. Firstly he always had to have the cream jug last, because by the time he’d finished with it you’d need to make a trip to the kitchen to fetch more. Secondly he always left a silhouette of his plate on the table once he’d been let loose with the sugar shaker. Now after Dad died, we decided to let the grandchildren each choose something of sentimental value, and Great Uncle Mike’s silver plate sugar shaker went to my nephew Michael. Once again the stars came into alignment while I was searching for a replacement silver plate dining fork since my sister had an odd number of them that was vexing her. I stumbled across a silver sugar shaker in excellent condition. I paid not much more for it than its weight in scrap metal, but it will see occasional use and be added to the hoard to pass onto my kids when I go.

Both items are frivolous spends, though the latter will certainly not lose value and the former will be worn and enjoyed (and probably not lose value because of the name it carries!)
£425 for a hat ? jesus!!

A N.O.S matched pair of valves for my amp. Shipped over from the US of A
Considering these were made in the late 1950's.
They sure sound good!

Feckin stoooopid money though!
What's that for, instrument or HiFi?

I love valve tone but it don't come cheap. I was looking (idly, of course) at valve guitar amp combos earlier tonight telling myself I don't need the hassle of a valve amp. But putting a few in my watch list 'just to see what they'll make' ;)

They are for HiFi mate.
12AU7's for the pre-amp section.
The difference of replacement is like day and night.
You can not beat valve amps and vinyl.

I'd be more inclined to buy a valve HiFi amp than instrument these days. You don't have to move a HiFi amp. ;)

I've an old Rega deck running through a 70s Rotel tranny amp but I'd be sore tempted by a valve replacement.

There is definitely no competition between Valve and Tranny amps for warmth. Over the years I have had a number of valve guitar amps that have been used and abused and never given me any trouble and I have only ever had to replace one pair of valves (on an amp I got from a mate that wasn't working). You'd be surprised at some of the marine equipment from 'back in the day' that I worked on with valves and it was judged suitable for use on life boats etc. with no special protection required for the valves. Once in circuit the things are as tough as transistors if not tougher and it generally takes a failure of some other component or abuse and incorrect operation to kill them. One thing to remember now is that, no matter what the brand name is on the bottles, all new valves are made in China (Shenzhen if I recall correctly where just about every valve amp made in China originates) and they are made on old Soviet era machinery (I think they bought the innards of the Sovtek factory) so it's simply not worth paying through the nose for 'branded' valves. There simply aren't any other valves being made in the world today. It's hard to say whether 'New Old Stock' valves are better than 'New Rinky Dinky' one's but folks definitely believe there is and I suppose that, given that the equipment making new valves is the same machinery that was making valves for Russian equipment in the 50's and 60's and has 60-70+ years of wear in it they might be right but I'm not convinced. The beauty of valves is that, as long as the bottle is airtight and the innards are wired right it will work. No tiny little bundles of semi-conductor trannies to worry about and, if it ain't glowing pull it out, plug in another and away you go.
