Got to see Flying Ant Day today - usually only see the aftermath on my visor.

Was enjoying a fresh brew coffee on the patio reading the paper mid morning when I realised the air around me was "shimmering". Looked up to find it was thousands of flying ants, all heading straight up. The lawn was a moving carpet of worker ants guiding the winged ones out into the sunshine, they sniffed the air, sussed the wind direction, and just launched. Amazing. It was all finished in 30 minutes.

On Friday we had flying ants going in & out of a tiny hole on the back of the house.
They've vacated now...

Looks absolutely gorgeous!
Yep. It’s at a place called Hondoq, in Gozo (Malta). The main bay with the beach is 200 yards around the corner and packed out; but if you know where to look..... :)

to the left of where I took the first photo from there is a cave about 25 yards deep, with loads of fish and on the ceiling are tiny black scorpions running around. (I know they say the small ones are deadly but these are the size of wood ants - the Mrs has a harder bite and the sting of her tongue is far more worrisome!) You can exit the cave with a short chimney climb of about 25 feet, but to be honest she was with me and wouldn’t have even tried it.

Had a lovely lunch in Rabat (Victoria). Rabbit pasty with a beer followed by a couple of coffees and a pastizzi. They also do duck pasties there, but I didn’t think it was appropriate for the forum (besides, I like rabbit pie and could envisage all the ‘you ate Duck’ innuendos which would ensue!

You in Gozo? I honeymooned there in 1979. Marsalforn. The development since is jaw dropping. The priest doing the cathedral tour tried to touch up my bride. He wouldn’t now.
Yep - the Maltese have built over most of their bit and are now desperately trying to turn Gozo into a building site. I have a house here up in Qala, and the mayor here is doing his damnedest to protect Qala from the developers.

My sister’s father in law had a house in Marsalforn - big old stone place and wonderfully cool compared to the temperature outside. I imagine Xlendi is priced through the roof. The Marsalforn I remember has disappeared. It’s about 3x the size judging by satellite photos.
