Took the boy out for his first driving lesson..... and survived
That's given me an idea for a thread...

How much was a 1hr driving lesson when you guys were learning to drive? Mine started out at £4 & went up to £4.50 after a few weeks.
How much is a 1hr lesson these days?

Old git bonus points will be awarded for any lessons paid for using large white £5 notes or a handful of farthings 😉

Mine were 3 groats if you used your own horse and cart, or 4 if you used the instructor's.

I think mine was around £3.50 (can't remember it was so long ago)..I only had 7 lessons and my instructor swapped my test date for another of his learners who he said wasn't ready.Piece of piss it was, turned out my instructor used be an examiner at the test centre and my examiner called him sir when he met him....recon I had almost passed before I got in the car 😂

just remembered .. I took my test in a brand new Peugeot 104 so that should date it

Took mine in an View attachment 13950Allegro. As if that wasn't bad enough it was in this delightful shade of baby turd.
Did my lessons/test in one of these...

Then a few years later I purchased one cheap. The previous owner had hit a large dog which had smashed the front end to pieces, but there was no structural damage.
Then I blew it up on the way to a job interview 😗
The AA still insisted on sending a small van with a few tools not a recovery truck as requested. Even after my description of the fault being..."Piston sticking out of the side of the engine block & an enormous puddle of oil"...
Fortunately it went bang right outside a pub on the A428. So I was able to amuse myself whilst waiting for the AA 🙂

Translate Triumph Acclaim into German (it never sold there). A pretty fair approximation would be Sieg Heil!

This was my learner:

It ate the reverse idler gear when leaving a MotoX in Haverhill. Drove home 50 miles in 3rd gear on A and B roads slipping the clutch like buggery at every junction or queue. British Leyland at their finest but not quite up to Allegro or Maestro standards of awfulness. I trust Red Robbo is still roasting in Hell!

It was £8 a lesson when I learnt; my mum had bought me 6 lessons with BSM for my birthday
Those lessons were done in a Metro but my mum’s fella gave me a few lessons in his car as well…….a Volvo 240 estate. Bit of a difference in size there! :p
I was due to take my test after the BSM lessons but tore the ligaments in my ankle and was in a cast for 2 months.
Bastards had put the price of lessons up to £12 when I went back to do my test

I had the misfortune of owning one, in orange. After having to commute from Northampton to Leicester every day on my GPZ500 I couldn't face another winter on the bike and the Allegro was all I could afford. I hated it :(

Now own up @Scrappy , have you been using paint shop to touch up that pic? there is not enough rust and rot on that car to be genuine, 🤣 they rotted as they went down the production line
