As I say to friends and family when their kids are thinking about uni - do a clearly useful degree, or if you really want to do arts/social sciences (I did) make sure you do it at a top university if you want your qualification to be worth the paper it's written on.

Basically grammar schools used to give the working class a leg up - the middle class 'left' abolished them.

No fee and a grant at uni gave the working class a leg up - the middle class 'left' introduce fees while 'expanding higher education' so every middle class kid whose parents can afford it can be bought a bit of paper from somewhere.

I don't see anything here designed to help working people get ahead.

Just a policy of creating lots of opportunities for their own off spring in the public sector.

I walk pass and say hello to them - one I actually get on well with
'Boris', 'Eton' and 'class war' are mentioned
I take my leave saying 'Too right! Anyone who went to public school - hang 'em!'

They're not used to being seen as an 'enemy' of 'the people' and just like Bojo 🤣🤣🤣

The modern UK uni is a self licking lollipop designed to generate revenue for ever growing teaching staff who in turn fill out the base of the pyramid for more professorial chairs in ever more abstruse, recherché, esoteric (!) ‘disciplines’ of no obvious practical benefit to man nor beast.

I give you Devi an American in Edinburgh apparently funded by Gates to lecture us globally on health policy. She’s an out and out academic courted by the media but her only hard scientific qualification is the equivalent of an A level in biology. The rest is all social science policy wonk but she pronounces on essentially clinical or microbiological matters.

My eldest has a degree in English Literature from a Russell Group red brick and it is utterly irrelevant to just about every job she has ever done. She now runs her own jewellery business employing, amongst others, her little sister who walked out of Edinburgh completely disillusioned and bored with a 6 month course crammed into 3 years. She was obviously far sighted because the market for modern languages and European Union studies has taken a dive!

And they can't see that their complete disassociation from the people they purport to champion means they truly do not know what they are talking about.
Riding a motorcycle does not make you a friend of mine automatically. There's a range of reasons people do it and I align with a few. Those with commonality I can talk to about the subject.
Similarly those who see poverty or working class values as an abstract concept for study I have no time for. They do not understand the subtleties.
Like a person who rides a bike is not one simple demographic, neither are people born in social housing, economically disadvantaged etc.
Some of them are cunts who need shooting. Some are people you are proud to know.
Pretty much like any strata .

I've spent a lot of time in the company of guys that think they can demand respect.
They've never got it from myself without earning it.
I always say I'll respect anyone that buys a sandwich for a homeless person. Far more than a bully who's demanding respect.
Saying that has made a few bullies stop/think. And it's undoubtedly saved me from numerous kickings for being "disrespectful"

I can't sit on a bench in town eating. Without folk offering me their spare change.

LOL I’d been sent to Bristol for a technical course on the Airbus A300 B2/B4. I was wandering down the main street in Cliffton amd there was a homeless guy wanting money for food - I don’t do the money thing since it can be misused, so I bought us both fish and chips and sat down with him to eat. A couple of the Dutch engineers from the course were wandering past and started to give me some money then recognised me!

The police are as "woke" as anyone can be. Their diversity and equality training, takes more time, than any other part of the course. They are churning out new Precious ones, and retraining the existing, at an alarming rate. Don't expect to get any sense out of them.
