What have you done to anything but your bike today?

Sorry to hear it’s in bits Duck, I’ll guarantee with your tinkering skills you’ll get it up and running in no time(y)

probably won’t need the angle grinder though:unsure:

Or the welding kit:oops:

What type of scope have you got?
Celestron something or another..would like to get it set up for winter but to be fair I have no idea what I'm doing with it and I don't think it's that powerful...its probably the size of a small kitchen pedal bin or a bit bigger..

That sounds like a very nice scope(y)

Do you know if it’s a Schmidt casseagrain (view finder right on the back) or a reflector (big mirror in the bottom and view finder on the side)?

And reflector

And is it orange?

It's not a computer one and not as trendy looking as those ones..
It's got a big mirror reflector and finderscope..I thought the finderscope was more powerful than the main scope...

Perfect sounds like a nice set up(y)

Have you come across colimation (lining up the primary mirror with the secondary mirror and eyepiece) and do you have a Cheshire eyepiece (the eyepiece used to Colima the your scope)

I suspect If the scope was not collimated when you used it the views would have been rubbish, however when collimated well the views through that scope would be spectacular on a dark night

I’m guessing the mirror is between 4.5 and 6 inches? If it’s 8 inches you’ve got a real cracker(y)
There should be some numbers on the side of the tube like f6 130, 150, 200 etc which would tell us:)

I'm going to dig it out and have a look..I don't think its anything above a basic telescope..
100% know it wasn't set up right but ex missus Duck knew everything and you wasn't allowed to question anything..

I would love a bigger and better telescope especially where I live in the autumn and winter night sky..something for next year maybe if all works out...

There you go..I think its pretty basic..I bought it as a predecessor to moving onto a bigger more powerful one..
Wanted to see how I got on with it but I was disappointed..
Possibly due to it being a bit low on visibility or maybe ex duck wife just fucked it up..either way it meant I could not buy anything else due to not using this one enough...

Cool so it looks like a Celestron PS1000 127mm f8 Newtonian reflector probably on a German Equitorial Mount GM1?

that means it will give great views of brighter objects (including Deep Space Objects) like moon major planets open clusters globular clusters (not good for galaxies though but nothing below 200mm is!)
Should also be easy on eyepieces(y) (you won’t need the expensive ones:))

below is a useful YouTube vid on collimating but they use a laser collimater rather than a much cheaper Cheshire (no laser just line of sight)

one point of warning though DONT EVER LOOK AT THE SUN it will burn your retinas out straight away!

Collimation

Set up your mount, put your scope, put your lowest magnification eyepiece in (bigger number) and have a play around(y)

I would love to have a shot at a big observatory type telescope but, although I have a Celestron similar to Duckie's still in it's box somewhere that the missus bought and has never been set up it would honestly be a waste of time around here. Most of the time there is cloud, fog or mist (the price of living nestled in amongst Scottish mountains) or, if the sky is clear it is bloody freezing outside although, with the nearest serious light pollution being around thirty miles away, the skies would probably make good viewing with a good scope.

Light pollution is the biggest problem for me, and street lights and neighbours security lights:rolleyes:

Surprised you get so few clear nights though I would have thought deepest darkest Scotland would be perfect for observing

And as for the Cold we ride motorbikes so we laugh in the face of such adversity😅 not😏 get yer thermals out Marty(y)
