Originally most definitely as Christmas replaces a Pagan feast day celebrating the winter solstice Yule in Scandinavia or Saturnalia in Rome

Both would have involved loads of drunkenness and over eating

So at Christmas eat, drink, and be Merry in the knowledge that you are celebrating ancient wisdoms

Or the birth of Jesus as you see fit
