The whole thing has been consistently hyped and Putin's strategy misrepresented or misunderstood.
Quite apart from allegations of NATO expansion and Russian 'fears' the one consistent thread has been Putin playing to the domestic gallery while incrementally expanding his zone of influence and control post USSR.
From the earliest days Stalin regarded some Republics as 'unreliable' so, although a Georgian himself (he understood!) he transplanted large Russian populations around the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Putin has no ideological hang ups (neither did Stalin) but these satellite populations provide him with the fig leaf of protector. Crimea may have been in the Ukraine but was strongly Russian in populace. Ditto the areas just invade/liberated/protected. The Baltic States of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania likewise have large Russian populations albeit in the minority. I would expect US mid term election results showing a strong swing back to Trump might accelerate Putin's timetable.

My concern is that China will see the relative inaction over Ukraine as an invitation to take Taiwan and even Biden couldn't ignore the implications for the Western Pacific rim.
