War with China/Russia

Interesting article from the Independant, are Russia doing as badly as we are being told? Certainly they don’t appear to be doing well on the basis that the aims of the Russian attack are the ones we are assuming….

But the areas of red on the maps are certainly growing and the huge column outside Kiev seems to have gone, but where???

Oh..... her? She's a bit of a lefty Kremlin apologist who styles herself an 'expert' but doesn't live there......

This was her in Dec:

I don't accept we are getting 'the truth' but I wouldn't regard Dejevsky as being a reliable or insightful commentator. Source protection often comes down to pleasing & telling people what they want to hear; It even seems to have bedevilled the very advice Putin was getting.

Give me a crayon and watch me colour the map. Meaningless. Not much linear in this fight.

way too much ‘he said she said’ for my liking….

What do you expect - it's war and as they say, the first casualty is truth?

Add in every journalist now pretending to be an expert and you get the swamp of useless information that is the media.

Interesting little titbit that I got via family connections is that all this sanctioning the oligarchs isn't exactly hitting people with Putin's ear - they don't know what the fuck is going on either. Still has to be done though as part of broader economic sanctions.

The Russians certainly seem tactically inept. I suspect they really aren't very good because so much of their teaching is still about rehearsed drills that have far more to do with fighting armour in open countryside (where you break down from column of march to tactical units) than the low level initiative you need for built up areas where surprises can be sprung on you so easily. That seems to be mirrored in the air where complex coordination is barely attempted. (You don't fly aircraft through active artillery barrages but you can deconflict them in time and space.) We used to rehearse exactly the sort of attack of their echelons where artillery got them to button down and hit dismounted infantry followed by immediate fighter ground attack then attack helicopters as the dust settled before arriving on our own ground positions.

I just get the impression they are reluctant to dismount and deploy a protective screen of infantry ahead of armour moving through built up areas. Consequently they are wide open to linear ambushes trapping and then chewing up entire columns. It's almost as if they expected tank on tank at 500m+ but are getting hit by hand held weapons at under 50m. A tank blowing its turret off won't leave too much recognisable of its crew.

Maybe they genuinely believed they would be welcomed or overwhelm all opposition..... It's actually pretty difficult to achieve any level of skill with annual conscript turnover because the NCOs training them in basics never themselves learn how to command in contact..... and the officers lack recent experience but tell HQ it's all absolutely spiffing!

Hope the Ruskies aren't reading this. It might tell them where they are going wrong....

I think that means it’s fair to say the Russians are doing as badly as we think then:)

Especially if they’re looking for strategic direction on the Phoenixknights forum😄

Not necessarily. It depends on how the Ukrainians are being degraded.

The interesting thing is that until recently the Ukrainians were a paler imitation of the Russians. They have clearly upped their game as well as having Home Team motivation and advantage.

That's recruitment for scum to fight on the Russian side even though it's apparently illegal under Russian law to be a mercenary Putin wants all the vile trash and criminals he can lay his hands on to join the slaughter of Ukrainians.
It definitely proves how desperate Putin is to get his hands on experienced/skilled combatants.

As for the mercenaries themselves. I believe they go where the money is. It's a bonus if they agree with the side they are fighting on as well.

Putin isn't just looking for mercenaries though, he is looking for merciless mercenaries with criminal records, even if they are wanted criminals and all round scumbags and generally scum of the Earth for sociopathic slaughter of innocents. People from Luhansk and Dontesk with an axe to grind and a desire for vengeance also welcome.

This is what happens to your socks after an unfortunate defeat by Ireland in the 6 nations 🙄
Whilst tripping over in a whiskey induced state. When you're rushing to the door to greet the JustEat man, when he rings your doorbell armed with your Saturday night curry 😋

This won't make sense to anyone based north of Leicester.
JustEat is something we enjoy in the civilised part of the UK.
Google it for details 😉
