War with China/Russia

At the heart of nuclear deterrence theory is the idea of rational actors - not madmen. The Russians no less than we don't want any 'accidental releases'. They tend to have shoddy systems and poor training as well as lousy build quality. That's what gets you a Chernobyl.

However, the idea Putin alone has a red button in a briefcase is for the birds and he, no less than we, has dual key systems that probably amount to maybe half a dozen in the chain any one of whom can frustrate the lunatic next door. I am quite sure there have already been quite a few 'what are we going to do about Putin?' conversations. Putin certainly thinks so!

I rather like the old saying I came across attributed to the Poles - To kill Germans is just business, to kill Russians is for pleasure

They also have another interesting saying I like - As mean as a Scot!

Having read quite a bit about how the Russians treated the Poles before, during and after the second world war I can't say I blame them for not being too 'in love' with their neighbours.

I can't say about the celebration of Scottishness frugality but along with Poles the Estonians and Latvians I know have a rooted hatred of Russia.

There's a reason we do this:

The projectiles at the back of the turret are inert. The propellant bags are in separate jackets below the turret ring. And the back of the turret is design to blow outwards in the event of over pressure inside. US Abrams/Leopard similar.

To achieve small silhouette Russian tanks have one less crew and an auto loader with an exposed carousel. It's always measure/counter measure. I this now counts as a fatal design flaw.

They don't feel like one but I never fancied going to war in one. They are a LOT tougher nut to crack than their Russian counterparts The only one we ever lost in combat was shot by another one...... from a different unit, at night in mistaken identity using the thermal sight.

Look like Finland and Sweden will be reversing years of defence policy and will both be applying to join NATO

Thing is Sweden have said no nukes and no NATO bases in its territory - how do they expect that to work then:unsure:

Well the Nukes side of things isn't a problem I think and no NATO bases isn't important either. Finland's stance is more important but, even then, it's the 'Treaty' that is important. That is their guarantee that, in the event of a threat from another nation, they have the ability to call on the big boys to help them defend themselves.

Strictly speaking it's a shift in Foreign Policy from non-aligned neutrality to being part of a defensive alliance. There was never any real doubt where Sweden stood but domestic politics being what they are.....Sweden was a declared neutral from the end of the Napoleonic wars.

NATO forward basing isn't really necessary given the strategic situation which revolves more around air power and bottling up the Russian Baltic fleet if necessary. There is minimal infrastructure in Denmark or Norway but well rehearsed and exercised reinforcement plans because the North Cape dominates the sea lanes to Murmansk, Russia's access to the North Atlantic.

Russia has a long history of wanting puppet buffer states on its borders.....

We did many exchange deployments with the swedes so moving in to help if needs much would not be a problem, their gripen aircraft are a good bit of kit and they are very well organised, so to are the Finns we paid host to them when they came over looking for new fighter types, As said before lets see how Russia takes this development
