What does woke mean to you?

What does it mean to be woke?
Woke was officially added into the dictionary in 2017 and it means to be awake to sensitive social issues, such as racism. The term ‘woke’ is at the centre of many of the fiercest political and cultural debates at the moment. Some people say being woke is a sign of awareness to social issues, others whip out the term as an insult.

I had to look this up as I don't have a fuggin clue what all this new world crap means, but as I am not a sensitive soul and don't give a toss about world issues I will wipe it from my mind and continue to be the arse I am, I am more content that way
Perfectly worded and exactly how I feel. Thank you.

Just reaching out to the brotherhood to “learn” what your views on this strange woke whatever it is thing is?
To me it about a bunch of intolerant, poorly informed wankers attempting to alter history so as to conform to their own narrow minded narrative.
Discuss,(if you want).
I think you have summed it up. Can I add that they enjoy the smell of their own farts.

Now I'd probably be called a bit of a Lefty by some on here, and I've been called a bit of a Tory by Corbyn supporters in the past, which is how I like it - if you're fully in a 'camp' you're probably not thinking for yourself in my opinion.

Now I know people that have the sort of opinions that are defined as 'woke', I share many of them myself, but these folks are not intolerant and are happy to engage in lively, indeed often humorously insulting, conversations about their opinions. To me that is how we all get to revise and develop our ideas.

The problem is intolerance for other's opinions and condemning anyone who disagrees. This isn't a left or right issue but an authoritarian/intolerant v libertarian/anarchistic/tolerant one. In the US and UK, currently the left seems to have more people like this. In other parts of the world, it's the right.

I'm the 'while I may disagree with what you say, I fully support your right to say it' sort.

Sounds like yourself & the people you mentioned are what I'd call genuine liberals.
That's great, I only have an issue with the virtue signalling plastic variety. The sort that think everything has to be their way, or it's the wrong way. They preach about tolerance whilst being totally intolerant themselves!

Good news lads, you're no longer the only liberals in the village 😉

I see that the madness of 'woke' is still going on. A week or so ago apparently some Country and Western star was captured on film by a neighbour while he was saying goodbye to some friends and, apparently he used the 'N' word with one of his friends (I presume he was trying to be funny) and the result was that his management and record company instantly dropped him and all the download services withdrew his music from their download lists end of career for saying a word! Today apparently some actress called Gina Carano who appears in something called 'The Mandalorian' was sacked by Disney and dropped by her management following a twitter campaign against her because she tweeted making an ill advised comparison between political intolerance in the USA and the Nazi campaign against the Jewish peoples in Germany. Apparently this is the second time they have tried to get rid of her with the first campaign to get her sacked after a tweet about needing to prove beyond doubt that there was no fraud in US voting where she implied that she just might be a Trump supporter. Apparently, prior to this she was decried as a racist because she didn't rush to virtue signal in favour of BLM when all that kicked off. Of course, here in Scotland we have had a bit of rumbling because a lot of rugby players didn't 'take a knee' before the match. Is it right that, assuming 'taking a knee' is a gesture you are supposed to choose to make of your own free will that you are condemned if you don't it? That sounds more like being forced to show obeisance.

Here's the story Marty is talking about.
I say fair play to her for not agreeing with BLM, if that's the way she feels. Why should she be dragged over the coals for remaining silent on the subject. It's not like she slagged them off, she just didn't post anything in support of them...

BBC News - Gina Carano dropped from Mandalorian after 'abhorrent' posts https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-56022084

I'll tell you what, I reckon the division between the 'liberal' and the 'illiberal' is way more important than that between left and right.

Fair enough DS,l used to be a liberal too, however, during Brexit I could no longer support them.I suppose I still have some liberal in me but a lot of the political sphere has lurched to the left in my opinion.
The background to the woke idea is a good humanitarian ideal, unfortunately as with so many of these well meaning movements it’s been hijacked by mindless zealots and moved to a different level which counteracts the original intentions of the idea.
We now have unconscious bias,BLM which spawned a perverted view of how history should be understood and cancel culture, all of this is woke but also intolerant.
God only knows what they’ll think up next.

I look at it this way - in 30's Weimar Germany the best recruiting call for the Nazis was fear of Communism, and the biggest recruiting call for the Communists was fear of the Nazis. The centre collapsed and the fringes grew, and it didn't end well - it never does.

I agree with you about Brexit - I voted remain on a 60:40 decision, but accepted we lost and thought now we get on with making leaving work, and like you I was shocked by the behaviour of those who to this day appear to be fighting against a democratic decision.

But I'm as happy arguing against an undemocratic liberal elite as I am against other injustices - bloody argue with anyone me ;)
