I’ll be miles behind the front in some cushty chateau.

Trouble is, all those criticisms of WWI generals shows eff all understanding of the state of comms equipment and thousands of miles of landline to command posts, artillery etc. You couldn’t quickly move it and you wanted key nodes beyond enemy artillery. Our forebears generally weren’t idiots. I except Hubaxe, Fagworth, Learningto*** etc. Plainly there are congenital issues of cretinism etc.

Well that was an interesting walk out with the dogs tonight! My walk route is out of my 'cul-de-sac' (ain't I posh) and turn onto the forestry road that starts on the right of it's opening (main/only tarmac road to left) and the whole place is one sheet of polished ice and even the gravel of the forestry road is slick with ice. I had to let my big black dog off the lead as she was so eager to get ahead on her four leg drive that she was seriously liable to cause me a nasty slip, especially on the steep downhill sections. Never seen it quite like this. The only thing that isn't glazed with ice is the grass and trees. Glad I don't have to go anywhere at the moment. Still no snow either and the stars are twinkling merrily away over Argyll.

Back in the days when we mostly heated our houses with the black stuff that came out of the ground, our coal man used to offer "coal de sack or a la cart". And you think you're posh!!

Rant of the moment - Feckin' black ice!

Raining today although there is still plenty of ice around. Out to the bike shed to give 'em a run. One of my Bonnie's not wanting to start because of the cold, flattened the battery a bit trying to persuade her. Pulled it and went to take it around to my other shed to re-charge it. Rounding the corner of the house and my feet went out from under me. I slammed sideways into the corner of the house, roughcast of course, and the battery hit the deck. Fortunately the battery isn't cracked and seems to be OK. I have got pain in my neck, shoulder and hip. Bugger it!

Sorry to hear you had a spill Marty, I have this vision of you cussing and swearing and all I can see is Willie (I think that was his name) the Caretaker in the Simpsons.

I think it’s the Almighty’s way of reminding you what a gentle ‘off’ feels like the wrong side of 40 to calm your exuberance when the ice eventually departs. Did you say any rude words?
I got T-Boned off the pushbike at a roundabout (bike under car, me flying a few yards) and the bystander nurse was complimentary on my abiility to take a fall.
However, I can somehow go to sleep and wake up finding I've a bit of my body that refuses to work or nags.
That is when you know you're on the slope. When you hurt yourself by sleeping.

I wake up stiff every morning (stop sniggering at the back!) and often have numbness and pins and needles in my arms and hands. The medico's tell me this is to do with constriction of the brachial nerves and just something that happens in 'old age'. I'm only 48 for feck's sake! Since I started weight training again it has improved greatly but it still does rear it's head, especially when I am stressed out about something.

It rained all day today and the temperature feels to be quite a bit above freezing and yet, when I went out with the dogs for their 11pm walk it was a real challenge of skill and balance getting round the roughly one mile circuit. The ground is still frozen solid and the rain hasn't made an impact on thawing most of the ice but rather just adding lubrication to make it even more slippery with even the grass verges now slippery. Never seen it like this. I guess it is simply that, prior to over a fortnight where it never went above freezing here, it had been raining almost constantly for weeks so the ground was completely waterlogged and then froze to quite a depth. Not too fun but quite remarkable and an interesting challenge to get around.

Just to update. No major damage to me or the battery. Racked my chest a wee bit it seems and a few minor bruises. More pissed off that I lost my footing as, on the way to the shed I slid but didn't go down and thought to myself "must watch that on the way back round" and then promptly went striding out like it was a summers day with the previously described results.

Im venturing out to work on my bike at 0500hrs in the morning after a week of the wife ferrying me to work because of the atrocious road conditions..Thankfully we have had some rain today so I'm going to give it a whirl...Getting across the drive to the lane is my greatest challenge..If I make that the rest is a piece of piss 😉
