Aye the French have always been a perfidious lot and they have never forgiven Britain for going over there and forcing them to take down their glorious white flag in two world wars. I remember reading the account of the late Donald John MacDonald, a member of the 51st Highland Division, of the fall of St Valery en Caux and how he and his fellow Scots couldn't understand why all the French troops in St Valery were putting white sheets on the roofs and hanging white towels out of the window while he and his comrades were still fighting. He said that even when the Highland division were faced with an overwhelming surrounding force of Germans and all but out of ammunition, and their commanding officer ordered them to surrender they found it so hard to drop their guns as they had been trained so well that their gun was a part of who they were and surrender was only for when you were out of ammunition. Those were professional soldiers!

If thats true about the british legion poppies my grandad will be turning in his grave. He went to france at the very start of 14-18 war and left after the last shot was fired. He joined the army in 1910 and his cavalry regiment were brought back from India as It was about to kick off. He spent the whole war in combat. Wounded twice brought back home to recover then back to the trenches. He was just 1 of 100s of thousand soldiers whos families could tell the same story. Or all the relitives that Lost thier loved ones. My uncle was badly wounded fighting the in rear guard to Dunkirk he was a Sergent in the guards. He could not fight again but spent the rest of the training new recruits. If thats is true it's the worst stunt those EU toe rags have pulled so far. I hope the people of this COUNTRY OF OURS remembers this when they want us to pull thier sorry arses out the sh*t again

Big fish eating little fish. Monopoly isn’t just a game, it’s a natural tendency within markets. When firms get big enough they don’t compete, they take out the opposition by buying it. We now have corporate empires that control the stories told about themselves. That’s not healthy for us or democracy or even the illusion of democracy …..

Well said Sir. My grandad was awarded this for his bravery protecting those ungrateful cunts. He was mustard gassed very badly and died a horrible gasping death due to his lungs being knackered. 20210619_223610.jpg

The Military Cross doesn’t come up with the rations. Do you have the citation? The ribbon has yellowed but can be replaced for display while keeping the original for sentimental purposes.
My grandfather was gassed too but survived albeit succumbing to throat cancer in his early 70s. Serving on the gun lines damaged his hearing irrevocably and ended his violin playing; his upper register was literally shot. More significantly, his nerves weren’t great. Anyone who knew him said he returned somehow not quite the man he’d been.

I remember as a kid being taught by him to sharpen things and him slightly distant telling how they sharpened entrenching shovels. I didn’t understand. He said quite matter of factly that bayonets got stuck and you could be momentarily defenceless whereas a battle axe could maim several attackers in the initial rush. Oh I thought you were behind with the guns? Sometimes but my Morse was too good so I was routinely spotting from the front trench. He said little else to anyone.

He had a productive leave though as otherwise my mother would never have been born….

My grandfather was awarded this for his efforts. Look how some of the ungrateful bunch of cunts in France have treated us ever since.... Don’t get me wrong, many of the French were extremely brave and resourceful folks who I would be proud to stand alongside. A shame about their political classes though.

Most families have history from both world wars If it's not passed on by each generation it will be lost forever. I was only 18months old when he died so Idon't even remember him my brother was born a month before he died. but I heard his history from my dad. I was promised his saber by my gran but it was stolen when she died. my sons and daughter have heard about him so it will get passed on I hope.

My Grandad was a career soldier but I think he was only in it to escape his shitty home life. I think he saw the army as 3 meals a day (most days) & a pay packet.
Eventually someone decided his Zen like ability to blend in whilst doing as little as possible. Deserved a promotion to the dizzy heights of corporal.
He wrote to my Nan to tell her the good news.
Then a few days later he had a falling out with an officer & decked him.
Obviously his stripe was removed & he had to write to my Nan again telling her to ignore the previous letter 🙄
He escaped the glass house & his only punishment was to be demoted back to a private. I reckon if the truth was known, he didn't consider that to be a punishment 🙂
