BAD LUCK DUCK

Today I've had a woman on the bus chastise me and a chap for talking about eating rabbits and other game..
She then asked if we felt it was necessary to shoot an unarmed rabbit that had never done anything to me so I replied that maybe it should have armed itself then I would have thought twice about shooting at it..
The big thing though was when she said why don't you buy frozen meat from Iceland that way no animals get harmed..I replied and where do you think they get their meat from to freeze it in the first place..she replied the frozen food warehouse..
And on that note I feel fully justified when I say we should nuke the world and let the monkeys have a chance like in planet of the apes...👍🦆

The answer, of course, is that an abattoir is vastly more stressful than a shot out of nowhere. And if you don’t think they don’t panic you have never been in one…..

They know alright. When I was in my teens, we used to live a few doors down from the local butcher who used to slaughter the animals whose meat etc he sold, and I would occasionally do some work for them, so I know the animals are aware what there fate is. Also our dog would never want to walk past the place, even when they were closed, the only way we could get him past was on the other side of the road and by practically dragging him.

Worse still is religious slaughter, which IMO should be totally banned

I'm very much a carnivore, but I believe animals should be treated well, living the best lives possible, and when their time comes it should be carried out humanely with as little stress as possible.

I've never been in an abattoir. I'm sure it would turn me into a vegetarian.
But a mate worked in one many years ago & he delighted in telling us about what went on.
He's a sick b@stard but it must take such a sicko to work in such a place!
One story I'll never forget was him allegedly putting his hat over a panic stricken cows eyes in an attempt to calm it down. Then removing it & shouting "peak-a-boo" before shooting the bolt gun into its head.
As I said, he's a sick b@stard & he thought that was hysterical! 😔

Edit...
A better description of him is somebody that drank in the same pub as me. When we were teenagers. He wasn't my mate.

He sounds like all the people I ever knew that worked in an abattoir
At least you were spared the stories of puss sacks (y)

I guess you've got to be wired in a certain way to kill for a living, day in & day out.
Especially when your victims are totally defenseless ☹
I couldn't do it Nick.
I'll happily eat meat though. I guess that makes me a hypocrite? 🤔

My old Dad the Min of Ag vet was utterly opposed to EEC slaughter regulation where ‘big is beautiful’ and you could transport animals unwatered for many hours. He was scathing about the welfare standards we were signing up to way below our own both for welfare and infection control.
He always sourced meat carefully. Chickens off the farm that I had to pluck and dress but he preferred butchers that slaughtered their own very close to the farm of origin….. not least because adrenaline production in the minutes before slaughter ruins the ageing process and quality in an otherwise decent carcass. Over regulation is actually the enemy of quality and welfare but it’s what the big money wants to drown out the smaller players who show up their produc.

If you were starving I’ll bet you would kill and skin your own meat(y)

In the west / north we are lucky and haven’t had to kill our own food for a couple of hundred years :)

Although I remember my Grandad wringing chickens necks…..
