450 SL Mr Winkie.
That proves my point perfectly Sarky 😉
The 450 SL was a 4520cc V8 with the performance figures of a modern day 1200cc inline 4 🤣

0-62mph took over 11 seconds & the average mpg also started with an 11 as well. Not to mention the handling on its 14" rims etc etc. Check out pretty much any "sports" car from the same time period & it's the same story.

Old classics might be cool to look at & easier to fix than modern cars. But there must be an awful lot of nostalgia & rose tinted glasses involved in the purchase. Exactly the same goes for bikes from the same era.

I agree with every word, but I'd still have one of those old, slow, ugly E types!

I'm not immune to a bit of rose tinted nostalgia either mate.
I'd have a MK2 Jag if it wasn't my only vehicle.
A proper little flying machine in its day. Hence the nickname of "The Bank Robber"
Just don't look at its figures on paper! 😳

When do the 'figures on paper' cease to be important? I know that the KTM bikes and their ilk don't excite me because they may have crazy amounts of horsepower but unless you have a real death wish, desperately want to die in a fireball or have the reflexes of a cat the horsepower is only likely to give you bragging rights and brown trousers. Now 'Classics' will always have 'class' hell it's right there in the word!

Give me a plodding but very cool 790cc Bonnie or a very sexy Daytona any day. I was down to get our car serviced today and was perusing the current Renault range and visually they are all dull, even the colours on offer seem pretty dull these days. It's like the world has had an imagination by-pass.

The ‘classics’ although slower, a lack of handling and reliability have ‘character’ by the bagful (y)

Several of my mates call my bike a plastic Triumph because it’s not a Meriden Triumph (inverted snobbery of the worst kind) but give me a bike or car with classic look and modern speed, handling, reliability, and no oil leaks any day of the week :)

They aren't the same kinda old that I'm referring to though Marty.
They can't hold a candle to the KTM superbikes you mentioned. But they don't need to & they are still good vehicles.

That Merc 450 that Sarky posted a photo of would have been considered quick & it would have been big money in the 70's. Possibly the cost of a modest house? Now, it's just an old but pretty car.

Edit...
Just found this on the interweb. How much was a 3 bed semi in 1975? In say somewhere like Birmingham to avoid the daft prices London

Talking of modern classics - what modern car is likely to become the classic of the future??

My Suzuki wagon (a classic comedy icon) will need replacing in the not too distant future - the question is, what to replace it with

None of them. They've become 'white goods' with carefully planned obsalescence.
There's more 20 year old cars on the road than 15 year old.

F#ck knows!
I'd be delighted if I could accurately predict that Nick.
I guess a good start would be anything sought after already, because it's going out of production.
But if that turns out to be a Fiat 500 & you need a vehicle to carry 5 adults with luggage. You ain't gonna purchase the Fiat. Regardless of it's potential to increase in value.

I’m guessing from these two responses I’m not going to find a modern car that will last into my dotage?

Fiat 500’s are definitely out Jez, I doubt I could get my gut behind the steering wheel, let alone the rest of me - gold mine or not:p

Mercs , Beemers, and Audis then(y)

Anything pre-2022 when they introduce automatic speed limiter technology (thanks to the EU ), or a horse and cart if Marty's apocalypse prediction comes to pass ;)

Pure class, along with Moto Guzzi 😁
Cool! 😃
My reference to Ducati's was based on much older bikes than yours Scrappy. My mate had a 900SS (I think?)
We'd often be stood at the side of the road waiting for a recovery truck. With me being forced to listen to how his bike had "character" & my Honda was soulless & boring.
That would be the same Honda that was only there cos its owner was offering moral support. Not because it had broken down again! 🙄

Consequently, when I hear someone claim their vehicle has "character"
What I actually hear is..."I love it, but it's an unreliable/temperamental piece of shit!"...

In the late 80s / early 90s an ex girlfriends brother had a 900SS (still does I believe), and he spent more time working on it than riding it.
