Consequently, when I hear someone claim their vehicle has "character
Does that not bring us back about 2 pages? The music instruments?
I have no doubt, there are (and sorry ragazzi, mostly not of Italian provenance) machines out there that have soul AND are fairly reliable.
Take Marty‘s Trumpet, an old Porsche, a good old battleaxe, or Margaret Thatcher… 🤪

I’m beginning to think a horse and cart is the way to go Scrappy:D
I don't envy your choices, esp at the mo with new vehicles being unobtainable and good secondhand being premium prices. I'm hoping my Merc can hang on for at least another year because the idea of changing *right now* will be 'unnecessarily expensive'
I'm struggling to think of a future proof motor right now.

I’m rapidly coming to the same conclusion Chas

New is out of the question - too much depreciation too quickly - and used all seem overpriced:unsure:

That would be less of an issue if I was keeping the car for 10 or 20 years , but I can’t see anything that would last that long:oops:

Cool! 😃
My reference to Ducati's was based on much older bikes than yours Scrappy. My mate had a 900SS (I think?)
We'd often be stood at the side of the road waiting for a recovery truck. With me being forced to listen to how his bike had "character" & my Honda was soulless & boring.
That would be the same Honda that was only there cos its owner was offering moral support. Not because it had broken down again! 🙄

Consequently, when I hear someone claim their vehicle has "character"
What I actually hear is..."I love it, but it's an unreliable/temperamental piece of shit!"...
France, late 80s. One of these bikes was a pure pain in the arse. Had to be bump started everywhere and then the battery exploded..

Even if it's worth fuck all if your current car needs three or four hundred quid spent to get it through another year I'd spend it.

Cos I've now had my car for four years I've spent more on servicing it than buying it. ;)

Is it a Laverda? 🤔
The same guy that had the 900SS also had a Laverda Jota. On his maiden ride one of the side panels fell off.
I was behind him & I accidentally ran it over 😗
He was not a happy bunny! 😳

Yep, my late mate Russ' '77 Jota.
I loved that bike but....
It missed the previous years EuroTour and he had to borrow an old roundtank CB550 to make the trip. I took my soulless Suzuki ;)
After an engine rebuild that cost nigh on a grand back then it was deemed fit for that year. But his missus had to jump off to push start it every time it stalled at the lights as the starter packed in. Then the battery (and it was a huge bosch jobbie) exploded so we had to find a batt of capacity for lights and charging only to get him mobile again.
Once back in England the ecu gave up and he ran it on two pots to work and petrol washed the the centre pot which bolloxed the motor again.
I traded my GSX in for 500 more than I paid (in 93 and after five years and a lot of use) against the Gixxer.

My GSX had character. And a bloody work ethic :D

The rise in price of used vehicles is bizarre but also fairly irrelevant.
Unless you're giving up driving/riding.

For example, if a vehicle purchased 12 months ago for £10k is now worth £12k. Although that sounds brilliant on paper. Every other vehicle has been affected in the same way. So technically we're no better off.

It'll be interesting to see if the price of used vehicles take what will appear to be a huge drop. Once the shortage of computer chips for new vehicles is sorted.

Most WE have spent on a car is £5K and that was the wifes motor, "Me" a grand tops and still did all around europe no bother in old volvo's and mercs, folk are afraid of mileage, if a car has been looked after and serviced they will last I saw 2-300 thousand miles on my old motors, that to me is being environmentaly friendly getting the most out of them, basically if I cant fix it I dont want it but then cars to me are a tool.

Suzuki's have plenty of soul in my book @chas Of the 'big four' they have always been my favourite. The GSX family of motors were so solid and smooth too. A mate of mine has stripped his GSX1100ET down and left it in a damp shed for a year before doing it up and putting it back together and, with no work at all the engine fired up on the first prod of the starter. The only problem was that every one I ever had always needed a new Reg/Reg and occasionally alternator too. It always seemed somewhat perverse that fitting the reg/rec from a Honda Superdream was the solution. Kawasaki would be my next in soul from Japan then Honda and finally Yamaha.

The ‘classics’ although slower, a lack of handling and reliability have ‘character’ by the bagful (y)
And that to me is a perfect reason to buy one...
Firstly you got to actually be able to drive the car ( not the car do everything for you..otherwise in my opinion you may as well catch a bus )...
Secondly I love being able to work on my vehicle myself...

For me those two things should go hand in hand and are part of what I love about man and his vehicle whatever it may be relationship because for some of us we really do love our vehicles...

I see that the accuser made anti-semitic comments and racist comments against black people in the past but, all he has had to do is apologise and the media say that he has 'learned' and 'understands how much it hurts' so it's clearly OK for an 'ethnic' to be a racist and religious bigot as long as he apologises and says he has 'learned' but a white indigenous Brit does it and he is damned to hell for all time with no chance of parole.

Yep!
Those appear to be the rules of the game Marty 🙄

The same white cricketer is being dragged over the coals for dressing up as Tupac Shakur complete with black face makeup. Apparently it was a fancy dress party with the theme of musicians/entertainers.
He said Tupac is his favourite artist of all time.
Instead if leaving it at that for a perfectly reasonable explanation. He's now apologising! 😏
When will folk learn that the correct response to a demand for an apology in such circumstances. Is GO F#CK YOURSELF!

You have got this all wrong. Youthful exuberance and intemperance at 19 doesn’t mean you are still a bigot at 29. You might be but an apology should be accepted unless and until there is evidence of continuing attitudinal problems.

Michael Vaughan has lost his TV pundit job as a result of this. He categorically denies saying what he is accused of. No evidence, no trial, other than by media, and he's out of a job.
