Found out at 0930 this morning that I look like gettin made redundant tomorrow or Friday. We knew t'building I maintain was gettin sold, but it's dragged on for months. I expected a few weeks notice, not 2 fuckin days!! Although I come wi t'building, there's a loophole int TUPE law, about buying commercial properties, so we've all bin given notice. T'maintenance company I work for dunt think they have enough work elsewhere to keep me, but I am gonna get some redundancy. I need to work cos of mi Grandson, so got to cobble a cv together, as I dint think I'd need one again!

I feel for you @Foxy, it's especially shit when you're not as young as you once were 😞.

I've just been through a similar situation myself, my two business partners pulled the plug on our business at the beginning of January, both having too many other commitments and large income streams elsewhere. After applying for a job and being turned down for being too old and over qualified, and agencies only sending me management positions or jobs with stupid commutes, I decided fuck it... I'm now working a couple of night shifts a week in a supermarket, which so far I'm enjoying. I'm going to have to make some sacrifices and cut-backs, but it feels like honest work, and I have most of the week to myself.

I hope you find something suitable for yourself very soon.

@Scrappy I know a couple of ex warrent officers who when put out to grass went to work at a local supermarket and they love it, "No stress" they tell me just do the job and that's it, hope it all works out for you too mate

A shite bit of news mate. But how many years have you got left until retirement? That V's how much of a redundancy lump sum you'll get could ease the pain a bit.
Gone are the days of 0.25% interest. These days you don't have to look too hard to get 4%. Obviously you couldn't live on that unless you get £500k in redundancy. But every little helps 🙂

Can't beat simple mindless work! One of the jobs I worked in years ago where I was happiest was working on the Council Refuse and street sweeping. Hard physical labour but it was outdoors, the guys I worked with were a good laugh, pay was OK, you didn't have to speak to the public unless you wanted to and you weren't expected to think. A lot to be said for that kind of work.

Forced to apologise simply for speaking the truth! 🙄...

BBC News - Suella Braverman: Civil servants demand apology over small boats email
It all begs the question just "who" is running this country, the civil service needs thinning out most are just marking time doing nothing

we should look after our own first, I do hope they can get these new messures through as we are running out of options
I seem to be drawn to such stories on YouTube. The lefties in the comments section all trot out the exact same response to people highlighting what that story is saying.
Their response is always..."Why don't you take in a homeless veteran then"...
Obviously it's said in an attempt to wind-up their opposition. But I see that exact wording so often. I can't help wondering if it's the same handful of organised leftie tw@ts with multiple YouTube accounts? 🤔

But those same lefties won't take in an illegal immigrant into their homes

The system has failed them, after service support should be in place
Sad to say that it's always been the same way. Why should they have to rely on help from charities? It should be in place already!

Wasn't it Wellington who referred to his troops as the "scum of the earth"? And look how they were treated when they were no longer needed. Attitudes of those in power are just the same now as they were then. Don't see many ex generals living rough, do you?

And then of course, grabbing twats will introduce a maximum permitted age limit on tyres, so you can be fined, like if they are below legal limit.

There needs to be an open public enquiry into real life factual emissions, not just saying "electric is green".

Assess if scrapping a vehicle before the end of its useful life is green. Prove that running a vehicle that uses batteries is green and actually good for the environment.

Then they need to establish what population our planet can sustain, be honest about it and plan accordingly. But of course they won't, because it doesn't suit big business. Can't make megabux if you are open and honest.

I read an assessment a while ago that stated that, while electric vehicles may be more environmentally friendly in terms of power (debatable of course as you have to determine the environmental cost of the electricity generation, including manufacturing and scrapping the electricity generating equipment), in terms of increased tyre and brake dust creation they were most definitely worse the ICE vehicles. Then there's the environmental cost of making the batteries and scrapping them. Electric vehicles are a complete con.

There are only two real ways to be environmentally friendly and those are cutting down drastically on use of powered vehicles of any type or figuring out a way to clean up after ourselves. Cleaning up after ourselves for me is the place we should really be looking into and the countries that should be doing most of that are the Indian subcontinent and China. The modern UK is pretty insignificant in it's current environmental impact by comparison.

I can't remember the exact quote but supposedly Thomas Eddison, when he invented the light bulb said something like - "In time the electric light bulb will make it that only the rich will use candles". The most ridiculous things about the modern world are things like Young's foods flying prawns caught off the Scottish coast to the Far East for processing and then flying them back because having a processing plant in Scotland was more expensive. Stuff like that should not be allowed. Encourage local manufacturing to cut down on shipping costs and restrict non-essential air travel. Things like that would not only make a deal of difference on pollution but would also bring jobs back to Britain. We've gotten too used to foreign holidays and cheap goods from overseas.
